Let me be completely transparent: I have a very special “thing” for willow. In spite of the fact that we live in the dry, high desert plains of New Mexico (a place not known for being hospitable to thirsty trees), we have an enormous willow …
Normally, I’d be spending the days leading up to the Autumn Equinox putting some thought and energy into summer’s transition to fall. This year, I was putting everything I had into preparations for Untamed Alchemy’s booth at the Santa Fe Renaissance Fair which happened to …
Horsetail has survived since the age of dinosaurs and is considered by many to be a living fossil. An incredibly potent source of silica, horsetail has been used for scouring and scrubbing since ancient times. A strong support for filtering toxins and a powerful tonic for the kidneys, …
One of the most entertaining and challenging parts of being an aromatherapist is creating custom blends for individuals facing very specific (and often uncommon) issues. Since my background and passion is in magical aromatherapy, I am often asked to design and create products that impart unique …
The vanilla orchid is the only orchid that produces fruit, namely the vanilla bean. Vanilla is considered to be the most labor intensive agricultural product in the world (and the second most expensive next to saffron). Cultivation is challenging as most vanilla orchids must be …
I appreciated the healing nature and golden magic of calendula, sometimes called marigold, long before I began working with it in my massage and aromatherapy practices: calendula oil was the first thing a wise woman gave me to soothe my cramps when they paralyzed me …

Unlike many trees celebrated for their aromatic oils, demand and pricing for Sandalwood are so high that often the entire tree, including stump and roots, is harvested and steam distilled for its fragrance oil. According to some growers, it takes at least fifteen years for …
If you doubt the power of herbs and oils, consider this inspired example of nature’s fierce grace…. Many of nature’s most powerful blessings aren’t a part of our herbal apothecary because of their threat to life even with minimal ingestion–herbs like foxglove, poison hemlock, and deadly nightshade are …
Ah, the ubiquitous rose! Symbol of purity, inspiration, beauty, devotion, elegance, fidelity, compassion, spirituality, sensuality, and, of course, love, the celebrated rose has enjoyed almost too much attention and adoration. Countless poems, novels, pictures, movies, and, yes, Valentine’s Day advertisements have alluded to the lore of …
Welcome!
Thanks for stopping by and spending some of your precious time here.
I'm Kristina, The Untamed Alchemist. I'm a distiller, farmer, and formulator enchanted by nature and fascinated by Mother Earth chemistry—this is my personal blog.
These pages celebrate my passion for formulating natural botanical skincare and herbal/aromatic remedies (associated with my business, Untamed Alchemy®) and my unending love of gardening, cooking, knitting, stitching, sewing, and otherwise engaging my hands.
As a storyteller and diarist with a background in archetypes, mythology, magic, folklore, ceremony, and liberation theology, I'm also prone to making connections and sharing contemplative musings about my experiences with aromatics, herbs, oils, food, nature, etc. and the lore that informs my relationship with them.
These pages began more than a decade ago as a safe, secret place to share my wonder and awe for the world. Though challenges and choices kept me away for some time, I'm delighted to be back with fresh perspective (Welcome, AuDHD diagnosis! Hello, menopause!) and a juicy, fun life to share.
