books, links, and more…

If you intend to leverage aromatics, herbs, and especially essential oils in blends for yourself, your friends, and your family, I encourage you to invest in resources that can inform safe use and empower your intention. If you’re just getting started and want to find volumes to ground your work, you might entertain some of the resources below — these are just a few of the books on my shelves! (Yes, I have every one listed, because DORK….)

If you’re just discovering aromatherapy, I recommend you look to books by reputable industry experts to get you started.

  • Robert Tisserand’s Art of Aromatherapy is a wonderful place to begin learning about aromatherapy. He brings beautiful perspective, powerful experience, and wonderful language. He also has a wry sense of humor.
  • If you would like to be empowered to safely and effectively begin to use essential oils more broadly in your day-to-day life and for therapeutic benefit, I highly recommend Nerys Purchon and Lora Cantele’s Complete Aromatherapy and Essential Oil Handbook for Everyday Wellness; their book has both breadth and depth, offers TONS of recipes, includes contraindications, and offers suggestions for substitutions for those with limited essential oils in their cabinets.
  • For a sublime exploration of the energetics of essential oils, Gabriel Mojay’s Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit remains a personal favorite–I continue to look to Mr. Mojay’s book all the time. Gabriel Mojay has an extensive background and his masterful use of language and imagery betrays the fact that he’s a poet, too.
  • If you’re just getting started and absolutely cannot wait to get started blending, but don’t want a lot of reading or don’t feel you’re ready for a comprehensive book, Andrea Butje’s Essential Living: Aromatherapy for Health & Home is a short, simple place to start. Andrea brings a lifetime of experience to bear in a book filled with easy, fun recipes with a little something for everything (body, mind, spirit, home) and everyone (babies to kids to adults).
  • If you are committed to being not just a consumer of essential oils and herbs, but becoming a responsible and conscientious practitioner, I encourage you to embrace and explore the collected works of Jeanne Rose whose breadth and depth of experience as an herbalist, aromatherapist, formulator, perfumer, and distiller are unparalleled.

While I (obviously!) love books, I can’t say enough about the power of a good teacher. If you are interested in leveraging aromatherapy in your day to day life, please, find a reputable teacher whose work is grounded in safe, effective use and whose teaching style inspires and empowers you. Many teachers offer opportunities for distance learning. Find what works for you, dive in, get wise, and blend great things!

bless and blessed be! xoxo the untamed alchemist
