Alchemy – by Definition
- a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination.
- a medieval chemical science and speculative philosophy aiming to achieve the transmutation of base metals into gold, the discovery of a universal cure for disease, and the discovery of a means to indefinitely prolong life and thriving.
- a power or process of transforming something common into something uncommon and exceptional.
Alchemy – As A Process
The process of alchemy yields something new and spectacular from otherwise base resources. By definition, the resulting creation is greater than the sum of its parts.
Whereas many people recognize the image of the alchemist transforming base metals into gold, few realize that alchemical theory can just as easily be applied to spiritual practice or creativity. From something as lofty as transforming one’s attitude and outlook–or as grounded as making a meal–alchemy encourages us to make more with what we have. Whether it serves to heal a broken heart with new insight on old thinking or inspires the art of combining essential oils and herbs to create exceptional, natural products, alchemy invites us to rethink the ingredients from which we begin, engage with them in change and growth, and invest in the outcome we desire from their transformation.
